The Right Item at the Right Time

Chiaki had just finished her shift at the school fair maid café when she noticed the younger girl. She was clutching the front of her shirt, and looked on the verge of tears. Who was she – someone’s sister? Chiaki didn’t recognise her. She did, however, recognise the problem – it was one Chiaki had had to deal with before herself. Buttons and breasts just didn’t go well together. Luckily, Chiaki was equipped with the right item for this situation.

The girl was hovering in the space between stalls, and Chiaki slipped in beside her. The girl looked at her with big surprised eyes, tears caught on the ends of her lashes.

‘It’s alright,’ Chiaki said. ‘I have something for you.’ And she unpinned the ribbon that finished the maid café uniform.

‘Oh!’ the girl said, when Chiaki offered it to her. ‘But don’t you need it?’

‘Not at all,’ Chiaki said. Maybe the classmate Chiaki was meant to pass the outfit onto would kick up a fuss, but Chiaki could just look vague and everyone would assume she’d misplaced it. ‘This is an emergency, right?’

The girl gave a trembly nod, and she took the ribbon. She struggled a little, getting the safety pin in the right place, but once it was done, the ribbon looked entirely natural.

Well, maybe it did draw attention to her bust. But it was better than the alternative.

‘You’re a student here, right?’ the girl said, putting on a still-wobbly smile. ‘You must be so smart. My brother just won the lottery selection, ha ha …’

‘Not really,’ Chiaki said. ‘I’m just a gamer. Who’s your brother?’

‘Naegi Makoto … he’s a first year …’

Chiaki didn’t know him. But that wasn’t unusual. It was hard enough to remember her own classmates, sometimes.

‘We’re in different classes, then,’ Chiaki said. ‘I’m a second year. Nanami Chiaki. And you?’

‘I’m Komaru.’ The girl bit her lip. ‘You said you’re a gamer? Have you played Existential Crisis IX? I’m playing it now …’

‘I’ve played it. Where are you up to?’

‘I’m at the boss battle with Inertia, but I’m kind of stuck …’

‘Ah, that’s a tough one, isn’t it!’ Chiaki could feel herself getting excited at the memory.

‘Maybe you could give me some advice …’

‘Definitely! Shall we get a snack and talk about it?’

Komaru gave a quick nod, looking adorably pleased. Perhaps there was something else Chiaki was meant to be doing right now, but that meant nothing when it came to helping out a fellow fan of Existential Crisis IX!

(Mahiru, when she found Chiaki twenty minutes later, wouldn’t be quite understanding.)
