"Which way are you heading?" Lan questioned as he stepped onto the tram platform and saw that Valentine had already called for the on-demand tram. He was only on his way back to his quarters and didn't want to take the tram from Valentine, if he even had the seniority to do that.

If Valentine wasn't going his way, he'd wait or ride a full loop.

When he'd been a student, it had someone times been a game to pick a destination, get on the on-demand, and see how long they could ride without ever getting where they'd chosen. At the right time of day, the on-demand would switch directions constantly as staff with higher and higher seniority called for it.

"Self-Defense Training with Minx," Valentine said with a smile. "Well, not for me as much any more, but as someone to get knocked around a little. "

"You still..."

Years ago, he'd gotten Valentine introduced to and training with Minx, to give him a few skills and fight back when he got bullied. Lan hadn't thought to ask if Valentine had stuck with it. He certainly hadn't considered that it would be a continuing thing on NIN-ANA that Valentine still helped with. But Minx was good at what she did, and she must have seen the value in it.

Valentine grinned.

"Want to come help? It's been awhile, but you're welcome to join in."

Lan wasn't sure what to say, but he didn't have to say anything as the lights of the tram appeared and it quickly slowed to a stop at the platform.

He stepped on and sat down beside Valentine. Across the aisle, Minx had three students sitting beside her.

She grinned at Lan.

He definitely wasn't going straight home.
