Prompt: Riku and Sora are faced with their own emotional upheaval. They turn to each other for friendly support.

Sora opened his eyes, blinked a couple of times, and groaned as various aches caught up to him all at once. He had to wonder just what he was sleeping on-- it was hard, for one thing, but not like sand could be hard or the wood of the docks. It definitely wasn't his bed, and that definitely wasn't his ceiling, which meant that he definitely wasn't--

Sora blinked again, throat gone tight as he remembered.

He started to roll over only to stall out halfway, caught short by his own deathgrip on someone else's hand. Riku's hand, he found out as he followed the offending limb back to its source. A Riku who was out like a light on the ground next to him, with a dark-purple bruise already swelling on the side of his head.

Sora gave Riku a shake and got a sleepy grumble for his trouble. Riku didn't wake up any further than that, though, so Sora shifted around him until he could sit up and have a better look at wherever they had ended up. It was some kind of alley, it looked like: a single narrow lane and tall brick walls, with lamp posts showing through the far mouth of it. It was-- different. Not entirely bad looking, he supposed, and obviously inhabited since he could just hear voices in the distance. It wasn't really dirty or run-down or creepy, and it had lots of rooftops and ledges that he thought would be fun to climb on, but it definitely wasn't home. And since the last thing he remembered was home--

The storm, grabbing Riku and rowing out to their island, nearly getting lost in the whirling darkness. Movement out of the corner of his eye, and a vague outline of something like a key. Kairi's eyes gone gold like a sunset. Reaching out, yelling Riku's name, catching an extended hand just before it all went weird and then went away entirely--

Sora shivered.

"Ngh," Riku said, opening his eyes at last.

Sora started up out of his thoughts. "You're awake," he said stupidly. And then, realizing that he was still holding on to Riku's hand, he quickly let it go before Riku himself could notice.

"Wish I wasn't." Riku's recently freed hand went unerringly to the bruise, and he winced. "Ow. What happened?"

"Don't know," Sora answered tightly.

Riku blinked, once and then again, pushing up to his elbows while his eyes tracked over the walls around them. "Where are we?"

Sora sighed. "Don't know," he repeated.

Riku looked at him, frowning like he did when he thought Sora was being dumb, only then his eyes went a little wide and Sora figured that he was remembering too. "Hunh," was all he said.

They eventually got themselves to standing, Riku hissing only a little as he moved his head. "Well," Riku said, "we're not figuring anything out standing here." He started for the mouth of the alley, shoving both hands in his pockets, pausing only long enough to toss a glance over his shoulder. "You coming?"

Sora had to take a few running steps to catch up, and turned to scowl up at Riku for making him. Riku gave him back a smirk that was only a little shaky at the edges, and didn't comment when Sora fell in closer beside him than the narrow confines of the alley really required.

Just another day, just another adventure, and maybe if they both acted hard enough it would turn out to be true.

The first door they found was marked with a giant number two, and pretty much the moment it closed behind them the ground started to shift, gold-eyed shadows seeping up through the cracks between cobbles. Sora froze, feeling a little sick and not quite able to breathe-- he'd kind of convinced himself that those had been just his imagination, but the sight of them brought back too many memories for that. He clearly remembered the way they oozed up out of the sand and skittered away from Kairi's steps--

"Sora," Riku said tightly, pulling at his arm until they were shoulder to shoulder. Sora just shook his head, not looking away from the nearest black shape, knowing somehow that those featureless gold eyes were staring right back at him.

The thing coiled itself, crouched, and leaped. Sora shouted, heard Riku shout, closed his eyes and threw up his hands-- felt a thrum, a flash. When the moment passed and he hadn't been knocked down, he cracked open his eyes to find himself holding a giant key.

The black shapes were circling them, keeping a distance; Sora dared a glance over his shoulder to see Riku staring in shock at the key in his own hand. Their eyes met.

Riku gave him a wild grin. "Well, then."

It wasn't quite like swinging one of their wooden swords-- more weight to it, more of a drag when the tines of the key went right through one of those shadowy shapes and ripped out a little glowing thing shaped like a heart. But it was close enough, and mostly Sora was just grateful that it worked because the shadows just kept coming even with the two of them working to push them back. Sora's shoulders were already getting tired; the tight quality of Riku's voice as he muttered curses probably meant that his head was still hurting him.

Riku nudged him, gesturing with a jerk of his chin. Sora nodded, and the next time the opportunity came they broke out of the ring of shadows and ran for it, aiming for the nearest stairs. If they could get some distance, at least-- maybe find a better place to fight than the middle of an open plaza--

Something moved ahead of them, and Sora's heart sank. Only, when he looked more closely he saw that it wasn't more of the shadow creatures, it was-- what looked like a duck waving to them, urging them on. Sora wasn't sure if he hadn't gone crazy after all, or maybe was dreaming the whole thing, but his feet were already turning that way and Riku was running right alongside him, so they'd have to figure that out later. For the moment, he was too busy giving a mental cheer as some kind of icy blast went shooting by his shoulder to knock down the nearest shadow-thing.

Sora heard the huff of Riku's breath as they turned, almost in time with his own. The familiarity of that presence beside him was comforting as they braced to make a stand.
