Psyche leaned over Mick's shoulder, and the end of the sofa he was sprawled on, to see what he was reading. It looked thin and well-worn, but the way he was holding it, she couldn't see much of the cover.
In response, he flipped it around to show her, his expression neutral-
"Is that-?" Psyche knew that book. She wasn't sure she'd ever forget it, though her memories were less of the story and more of-
"It is. I packed it to re-read on the trip here," Mick said.
"Twenty years ago!"
"A hair longer, but yeah. Saw it when I was reorganizing a bit and figured I owed it another re-read."
Psyche had noticed the reorganization in progress. There were books everywhere, more-so than usual. But she hadn't expected...
"That last summer, before you came here, you read me that whole thing for no reason other than we were both on break and I was bored."
"That was reason enough," Mick replied. "We read a chapter every day, even when Mother was fussing for us to do more productive things."
Psyche frowned at him. He'd said the word and a moment later, he sighed.
"Yeah, I know. But neither of us had escaped yet."
"I know."
Psyche circled around and sat down on the floor, leaning back against the sofa.
"It's summer," she said. "Start at the beginning?"
