Ready To Go (England Series, Kim & Fen)
Title: Ready to Go
Fandom: G
Pairing/Characters: Fenella Carruth & Kim Secretan
Rating: G
Content Notes: none
Prompt: September Two - 4 & 6 with the title "Ready to Go"
On the surface, it was the perfect party. The electric chandelier blazed with light; champagne sparkled in glasses and loosened nerves and tongues. Kim sipped slowly from his glass and surveyed the room. This was certainly not Will’s natural habitat, and Kim had had his fair share of metaphorical bruises inflicted in places such as this, but Miss Carruth’s ballroom was as pleasant a place as any, and her fundraiser was for the noblest of causes.
It was simply icing on the cake that some of her donors were not acting in good faith.
Will and Sir Archie were on the other side of the ballroom, watching and waiting. Kim could feel his angel’s eyes on him, just as he knew Curtis’s blue-eyed gaze was directed through the French doors onto the terrace, where DS strolled with Miss Merton on his arm. They had agreed to move at midnight, and Kim’s job until then was to ensure Mr. Lefford and his associates made no attempt to leave. If they did, the reprisal was sure to be very swift indeed.
“Are you occupied, Mr. Secretan?”
Kim smiled. He had not spoken much with Miss Carruth, but it was a relief that she knew he preferred this form of address, however technically incorrect it might have been.
“Merely waiting for something to happen.”
“Yes.” Miss Carruth’s smile sparkled, to anyone looking, they might have been having a very different conversation. “Things so often do, when one is acquainted with the gentlemen I call friends.”
This was a line of curiosity to be pursued further; he’d known about DS and Curtis’s long acquaintance with the two most intriguing older ladies Kim had ever met, but he hadn’t known precisely how much chaos agent and angel had exposed them to over the years. Apparently, quite a bit.
“I was given to understand Will and I were responsible for the most mayhem DS had ever seen.”
Miss Carruth’s laugh sparkled like the finest champagne. “Oh, I must tell Pat. I can only imagine the look on her face.”
Kim was astute enough to recognize the connection between Misses Carruth and Merton. He deposited his glass on the tray of a passing waiter.
“Miss Carruth, would you like to dance? It will make the time go, and we might discuss our mutual interests further.”
“Nothing would please me more, Mr. Secretan. I do hate the waiting. It makes one so restless.”
Miss Carruth’s gloved hand slid firmly into his, and they swept out among the dancers. At midnight, DS’s meticulously set trap would snap shut, but for now, Kim was going to dance.
